A Guide to the D Vitamin

The d vitamin has been the source of a lot of research over recent years and is thought by some to hold a great benefit towards preventing numerous chronic diseases.

Not to mention the fact that scientists discovered long ago that the d vitamin is an essential nutrient that our skin creates when it is touched by the ultraviolet lights that are formed from the sun.

Unlike other vitamins, you do not get your d vitamin from the food that you eat, in fact, it comes to you when the sun touches your flesh. Although we have all heard that too much sun can be bad for you, and that is true- we do need certain amounts to ensure that we are receiving the d vitamin our bodies crave.

The good news is that we do not have to spend significant amounts of time in the sun to ensure that we are getting our required daily amount of the d vitamin and vitamin d benefits. Even a few minutes each day will provide us with enough d vitamin to stay healthy.

The calcium we absorb from food is directly controlled by the d vitamin. The primary function of calcium in our bodies is to form strong teeth and bones but also, it is necessary to help our muscles like the heart, to contract. This is done by messages being sent along the nerves, all again something that the d vitamin is needed for.

Without enough calcium in our blood, these functions could not be preformed properly, so the d vitamin ensures that we have the calcium we need for our bodies to operate at prime condition. It is believed that the d vitamin helps cut down on our risk of contracting some forms of cancer, specifically colon cancer. Our immune system benefits greatly from our daily required amount of the d vitamin as well.

Vitamin D3 ~ Cholecalciferol

The variant of the D vitamin that is formed under the skin is known as vitamin D3, or cholecalciferol. This D vitamin is created when the ultraviolet in the sunlight reacts with a type of cholesterol that is found under the skin naturally.

D3 is then changed into a form of the d vitamin within the liver that is more vigorous and then is sent out to where it can do the most good within our body. There is a certain amount of the d vitamin that stays in both the liver and kidneys to aid in the reabsorption of calcium from our blood.

Our bones receive the remaining d vitamin to help the hold onto calcium as well as the intestines to help them in absorbing the calcium we take in from food consumption. D2 or ergocalciferol is the form of the d vitamin that we get from food. Our bodies use this variant in the exact same way as it does the other forms of the d vitamin to help us look and feel healthy. Get some sun for Vitamin D benefits.
