Toe Nail Fungus, Easy To Catch And Easy To Cure

pretty feet

You may think that your toenails are protected, and that the worst that can happen is that you get an ingrown toenail.  But, your toenails are just as susceptible to injury, disease, and infection as any other part of your body.

Perhaps even more so since your feet come in contact with some pretty nasty surfaces on a daily basis.

One thing you may not want to think about is growing fungus on any part of your body. Toenail fungus sounds like the kind of stuff you only see in sci fi movies or read about in sci fi books, doesn’t it.  Well, guess what.  It can definitely happen, especially on your toenails.

Some people may notice that their toenails have become yellow, and are so brittle that they begin to crumble.  Sure, they realize that something is wrong.  But what they don’t realize is that what they are seeing is actually caused by a fungal infection, toenail fungus.

Just about anyone can find themselves with the unpleasant condition toenail fungus. Fungal infection on is actually a pretty common foot ailment, with around 15 percent of the world’s population having it.  Those aged 70 and up make up about half of that percentage.

Toenail fungus is actually fairly easy to contract.  Fungi can be found just about anywhere, in dirt, on your floors, in your carpeting.  In addition, places that are dank, wet, and dark can house fungi, which is a part of the mildew and mold family.

If you walk on a surface where fungus lives, it can find its way under your toenails, as well as under your fingernails and onto your feet.  The good news is that it cannot occupy your body!

In most occurrences, fungus will only find a home under one of your toes.  However, it can spread from that one toe to the surrounding toes.

Many cases of fungal infections are found on a person’s little toe or big toe.

Although both are caused by fungus, toenail fungus actually differs from athlete’s foot since the fungus that causes that actually live on your foot’s skin.

If you use public showers, you are more at risk for contracting a fungal infection.  In

addition, your risk increases if you wear shoes that fit too tight or if you don’t completely dry the places between your toes.

To tell if you have a fungal infection, look to see if your nails are discolored, thick, yellowed, or have began crumbling.  Also, the nail can be painful or even difficult to trim.

Even with the help of a doctor, a fungal infection can be difficult to treat.
However, the sooner you seek help, the sooner you will be on your way to healthier nails.

During treatment, you may need to use medication, but it all depends on how severe the fungal infection is.

If a case of fungal infection is really bad, the toenail may need to be removed, but that is the worst-case scenario.

If you take care of your feet, keeping them clean and dry, you can prevent toenail fungus from occurring.
