Kathy Hilton is a perfect example of lovely mature smokey eyes. No matter how many candles you blew out on your last birthday cake, every woman deserves to love the way she looks.
And your beauty choices should not be dictated by the number on your driver’s license – so with just a few little hints and tricks, you’ll be able to rock your very own super sexy smokey eye.
There are no hard and fast, ironclad rules for beauty, but I do need to give you one gentle suggestion. It is to go easy on eye shadows that are full of glitter and shimmer, as it tends toward fallout and shines a bit of a spotlight on even the teeniest little wrinkle.
If you do have a sparkle addiction, try to keep the shimmer to a minimum and focus it largely in the crease of the eye. Smokey eye makeup does not necessarily have to be black or even particularly dark. In fact, softer shades like plums and olive greens, or dark browns and charcoals may prove to be more flattering to a variety of faces.
Hydrating the skin is key at any age, but especially important for gals over forty, even if skin still leans toward shininess. Moisturize skin morning and night, and definitely don’t skip on the eye cream.
Do allow a few minutes between moisturizing and makeup application if possible, as cosmetics go on more smoothly when lotion has had time to sink in to the skin.
Begin by prepping the eye with a good eyeshadow primer, like Urban Decay’s Primer Potion or Too Faced Shadow Insurance. Start with a matte neutral shade all over the lid to ensure the perfect canvas, and follow up by applying a medium tone shade on the lid and blend out towards the crease with a big fluffy brush.
Liner can be tricky on eyes of any age. You may want to trade in your pencil for a cream or gel based liner and brush, as they offer greater control and are less likely to tug on the delicate eye area.
Apply a very thin line of eyeliner right up against the upper lash line, and don’t worry about making the line too perfect because you’ll give it a little smudge as soon as you’re done.
Lower lashes can be lined with the same shadow used on the eyelid, but applied just outside the lower lid with an angle brush. If you’d like to add a little extra pop, run a bit of white or nude eyeliner along the bottom waterline, or just in the inner corners of eyes to bring them forward.
Give lashes a curl, and finish up with a few coats of your favorite thickening, lengthening mascara (Covergirl Lash Blast Fusion is a great one), or for an extra special occasion, add a few individual lashes from the outside corner in.
Be sure to complete the look with a few strokes of neutral, peach-pink blush (which, when applied to the apples of cheeks gives a youthful flush) and add a few dabs of gloss to the middle of lips for a plumping effect.
