Kubu Spa Review
KuBu treatment rooms are located in the heart of Henley on Thames. Bell Street is a narrow, busy, shop-lined street just a stones throw from the river. KuBu can be found behind a large black door, occupying a listed building that was once assembly rooms, and is now the home of a heavenly host of traditional Balinese treatments.
Owner Eileen Soriton is Indonesian by birth and honed her massage skills under the guidance of Balinese guru Dewa Andayani. Her business partner Sasha Becejac is fascinated by Indonesian architecture and design.
Between them they have developed KuBu into a haven of Eastern massage rituals, hospitality and decorum, in an environment beautifully theme with authentic Balinese décor and furnishings.
Spa Treatments and Therapies
KuBu offer a comparatively small range of treatments, but its menu is of the highest possible quality and includes rituals and treatments that last for several hours, as well as facials, manicures and pedicures.
The KuBu signature ritual starts with a restful flower petal foot soak, after which your calves, heels and toes are massaged to aid the unwinding process. Next up is an extravagant full body massage that incorporates a wonderful blend of essential oils.
For this you are invited to choose between a traditional Balinese, aromatherapy, Ayung Batu warm stone or mum to be massage. Your ritual is completed with a relaxing soak in a flower petal bath, during which you are encouraged to enjoy an herbal tea, or more decadently a glass of champagne, not forgetting some wonderful KuBu chocolate truffles.
As the door closes behind you on entering KuBu you leave the troubles of the world behind too. In front of you is a wide staircase, and at the top you will find the reception area. With its dark wood floors, carved floor paneling and fragrant aromas it is a welcoming and peaceful environment. Here a selection of Lavere and KuBu products are on display and available for sale, so that you can enjoy the essence of KuBu at home too.
From the reception area the other facilities can be accessed. There are just three wooden floored treatment rooms, each one large, painted in warm, soothing colors and simply furnished with a wooden massage table (topped with a mattress) cupboards and, behind a screen a huge bath, easily big enough to share.
There is also a large and airy yoga studio where Iyengar and Astanga based yoga is taught, and a wonderful relaxation zone in which the centerpiece is a massive hand carved wooden four-poster bed, curtained and covered with sumptuous cushions.
The ambient feeling of warmth, luxury and a personal service at KuBu have not been overlooked by the rich and famous. Much feted by many of the up-market periodicals including Harpers & Queen, and Esquire, KuBu was also a finalist in Best Day Spa of the Year category for both the British Beauty and Spa Awards and Professional Beauty and Spa Awards 2008.
