Those who are dealing with diabetes commonly deal with a variety of foot problems, and one of the most common ones is neuropathy.

Neuropathy, which is actually a nerve disorder that usually occurs as a result of diabetes, occurs in about 25% of the people who have diabetes. Although at first it may not be very noticeable, over time it can become quite painful and bothersome.

Symptoms - There are a variety of different symptoms that diabetics need to be aware of. Usually the first symptoms that you will notice in your feet include tingling and numbness, almost as if your foot has fallen asleep.

This numbness can give way to intense pain in the feet as well. After having this for a time, it may progress to a point where you notice that your feet and legs are very weak as well, and you may have a hard time getting up when you have been sitting for awhile. Due to the numbness that you can experience, it may be easy to injure your feet without even realizing it.

Treating - There are some ways that you can treat this , although total recovery may not occur. For the pain that is involved, usually doctors will prescribe simple analgesics, anticonvulsants, and even some very low doses on antidepressants as well.

Taking the needed medication to keep sugar levels under control can help to treat neuropathy as well. Many people also find that soaking their feet, using special stockings, or even making sure to take a moderate paced walk each day can help to treat their diabetic neuropathy as well.

In some cases patients may see a decrease in symptoms; however, as a general rule there is no actual cure.

Preventing - While there many not be an actual cure for diabetic neuropathy, there are a variety of things that you can do on your own for prevention. First and foremost, the most important thing you can do to prevent this problem is to keep your sugar under control.

Make sure you check it every day, take your sugar medication as directed, and watch carefully what you eat. Keeping your blood pressure as low as possible can help to prevent diabetic neuropathy as well.

Making sure that you do not sit for long periods of time and taking a walk can help increase your circulation as well, which can help you prevent diabetic neuropathy in your feet.

Remember, your feet are very important, and this condition can cause you a great deal of problems. Do everything you can to prevent it to keep your feet in excellent shape.
