The Importance of Daily Dental Care

Daily Dental Care is a MUST. Sound familiar? It should! One cannot over-stress the importance of daily dental care when it comes to oral health.

Good dental health means taking care of your teeth every single day. Some people wait until just before a dental appointment to get in there are really brush and floss thoroughly.

Unfortunately that one-time effort simply won’t be enough to ensure that you’ll keep your adult teeth and gums in good condition for many years to come. Slacking off on daily dental care also means you’ll also find your trip to the dentist takes much longer (the dental hygienist will need more time to clean your teeth completely).

Dentists and moms alike generally recommend flossing at least once a day and brushing after meals. This isn’t advice that’s set out without good cause. Nearly 90% of all adults experience gum disease at least once in their life. Proper dental care increases your ability to fight gum disease and cavities among other things. For example, daily dental care is a must in keeping plaque at bay. This is the leading contributor to gum disease.

Plaque gathers at the gum line and keeps germs trapped inside the gums, leading to bleeding and soreness. When plaque isn’t managed properly it leads to tarter buildup. Tarter grows underneath the gum line thereby worsening the problem.

Visiting a dentist twice a year for teeth cleanings will help keep your gums tarter free, but your dental hygiene routine at home really needs to be the first line of defense against gingivitis (the first stage of gum disease) and periodontis (the second stage of gum disease). Without treatment for either of these you can begin loosing teeth.

What exactly constitutes proper daily dental care? First, when you brush your teeth make sure you spend at least three minutes on this task. Watch to see that the brush massages the gum line on both the front and back of your teeth.

Take care to reach all the chewing surfaces (back and forth, up and down). And don’t keep using the same toothbrush for years. It’s recommended that you replace your toothbrush about once a quarter.

After brushing the next "must” in daily dental care is flossing to remove plaque. The strand of floss should be moved gently between your teeth to the gum line to loosen any bits of food and plaque. Once the floss gets worn, use a new piece. Go one tooth at a time. Finally rinse out your mouth thoroughly with a germicidal mouthwash.

While we know that daily dental care is a must for healthy teeth and good oral hygene, this alone may not help individuals with diabetes. Diabetics have a higher rate of oral infections including thrush. This happens because of blood sugar levels and use of antibiotics.

With this in mind it’s doubly important for those with diabetes to follow a sound dental protocol to help keep that smile natural and healthy.
