Bamboo towels resemble cotton towels in many ways.
Going Green With Towels
They're becoming very popular especially in households that are trying to go green.
See, bamboo fibre is a highly renewable resource that offers many other advantages. This article explains a little bit about bamboo fibre towels and why you might want to consider them for your home.
Why Bamboo Bathroom Towels?
Bamboo bath towels are made from bamboo pulp. Anyone who has ever grown bamboo knows this plant grows very heartily and strong. It does not usually require pesticide treatment during growing.
That means it's easier to sustain than some other fabrics, and every ecological. Additionally, bamboo's positive qualities include:
- Excellent wicking (keeps dampness away from the body)
- Strong and resilient
- Light weight
- Antibacterial qualities
- Most people do not have allergic reactions to bamboo fibre (it's gentle)
- Insulating (stay cool in the summer, warm in the winter)
- Illustrates color fastness like cotton (if not better)
- Pill resistant
Note that the antibacterial effects of bamboo fabric do eventually wear off. While present, however, this quality keeps your towels smelling fresh in between washing because it fights mildew that would otherwise grow in the towel's dampness.
Buying Bamboo Towels
If you're thinking of buying bamboo towels for their environmental friendliness then look for organic bamboo. This fabric has not been bleached extensively. The lack of treatment also makes this even softer than bleached bamboo.
To insure the product is organic look for towels with a GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) marking, or the Skal "EKO Sustainable Textile" marking.
Also watch for the percentage of bamboo in the towels. Some manufacturers make bamboo-cotton towels (70 percent / 30 percent ratio).
This creates a slightly heavier towel that's a little less expensive than 100% bamboo. Price wise there is a huge range out there so you will want to shop around.
You can find a ten pack of hand towels for as little as $10, or a luxury pack of 36 towels for $1,300.00! Single towels average between five and 40 dollars depending on the size.
An average set of bamboo towels (bath towel, hand towel and washcloth) was around $125.00 on the net.
Caring for your Towels
When you get your bamboo towels home wash them in warm water and vinegar (about 1 cup to a load). You'll notice the towels get softer and more absorbent after several washes.
Avoid using fabric softener on these towels. It actually lessens their supple texture. Likewise never use bleach. Wash the towels using the delicate setting on your machine, then dry. If your dryer has varying settings go for medium warmth.
