Let's start our series with Number 1 on the list — nutrition. The food you eat is the fuel that powers your body/mind. High quality food in the quantities that your body needs gives your cells the fuel they require for optimal performance.

There are three things to consider when evaluating your fuel.

1. Your food choices. It has become common knowledge that fresh, whole foods provide the fuel your body needs. Fresh, colorful vegetables and fruit such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage, tomatoes, peppers, squash, apples, oranges, berries and many others provide your cells with nutrients that help them thrive.

What we recommend is known as a low glycemic diet, which is one that eliminates foods that are full of easy-to-digest carbohydrates or refined sugar products.

A glycemic index has been developed that indicates how quickly specific foods affect blood sugar. Refined sugar has the most rapid effect and has an index number of 100.

Broccoli, on the other hand, is 30 and chicken is 25. We recommend that you choose foods in the low to moderate range and eliminate all refined carbohydrates, such as white flour, pastries, and "junk foods."

So, what we recommend is a high protein, low fat, high fiber, moderate complex carbohydrate (vegetables) eating plan

2. How much food you choose to eat. Your body only needs 1500 to 2000 calories a day, depending on your size and activity levels. When you eat more than you need, you gain weight and stress your body systems.

There is a theory that is prevalent in anti-aging circles that eating fewer calories than you need, combined with excellent nutrition, leads to fewer cellular reactions that stimulate aging.

We have done a lot of research in this area and have seen that a daily intake of 1200 to 1500 calories a day, along with specific nutritional supplements that allow for balanced nutrition, immune system stimulation and antioxidation, which we will explain in a moment, will contribute to a longer, healthier life.

3. The Supplements you use. Because modern lives are high stress and the food we eat is often produced in mineral-deficient soil, most people need — and thrive with — added nutrients in the form of supplements. We have spent many years studying and evaluating many kinds of supplements.

Free radicals are now considered one of the main causes of aging. A free radical is a molecule that has either an excess or deficiency of an electron. When free radicals come close to cell membranes, chemical reactions occur that damage cell membranes and make them "leaky." Leaky membranes result in cellular damage and destruction of DNA. This causes mutations and cellular death.

Whole grains such as wild rice, brown rice, barley and soy products. Well-cooked oatmeal is also acceptable.

2. Limit your calorie intake to 1200 to 1500 calories a day, but you don't have to count calories. Just eat fresh whole foods and you will find yourself self-regulating.
